Initiatives
The Toronto Society of Architects undertakes numerous initiatives over the course of the year to raise awareness about architectural design and urban issues in Toronto. The TSA also works to be an enabler, supporting or helping individuals or groups to develop their own ideas and initiatives.
In the past, ideas generated by TSA members or executive have grown into much larger annual events that are organized and managed by the City, including Doors Open Toronto and the Festival of Architecture and Design (fAd).
Members can stay informed on current architectural and urban issues through our regular Urban Affairs Forums, e-bulletins, and the Events page of our website. The TSA has published and is developing publications focusing on architecture in Toronto – the TSA Guide Map (Toronto Architecture 1953 – 2003), and an Open Spaces guide map. Past initiatives included the annual poster competition and design matters t-shirts, the Modern Heritage Building Initiative, CANstruction, Unbuilt Toronto exhibition, and the annual TSA Film Series during fAd. Every Summer the TSA also hosts Toronto Architecture Tours, and Toronto Building Tours. Toronto Architecture Tours are open to the public and are the only tour series in Toronto to highlight post-war and contemporary architecture. Toronto Building Tours offer a chance for TSA members to see behind the scenes of some of Toronto’s newest and most interesting buildings led by the architects who designed them!
The TSA also supports many different organizations, lecture series, galleries and events: Doors Open Toronto, Toronto Urban Design Awards, Heritage Toronto Awards, Toronto the Good Party. In the past, the TSA held seminars and workshops for intern architects preparing for their NCARB examinations. Publications that have been supported in the past include Concrete Toronto, John Lyle book, and the Ryerson University and University of Toronto AL&D Graduate Thesis Publications. In addition, the TSA funds annual scholarships for University of Toronto AL&D and Ryerson University students.
